Dubovskoy Nikanorovich Nicholas
(1859-1918)
Landscape painter by vocation and keeper of the sacred traditions peredvizhnichestva by conviction, NN Dubovskoy belonged to the younger generation Wanderers. His dedication to the art of telling jokes. One day, he was so absorbed in his work on sketches from nature that had forgotten about his own wedding and was in church when he was almost stopped coming.
Dubovskoy boy went to military school in Kiev, but it is so drawn to the arts, that every day he would get up two hours early and drew. Director of the school advised the parents to send his son to study painting.
Seventeen-year-Dubovskoy went to St. Petersburg and entered the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with professor of landscape painting AM Klodt (1877-81).
Already in 1884 Dubovskoy - in the ranks of the Wanderers, and soon (in 1889) became a permanent member of the council and a board member of TPHV. After the death of
N. Yaroshenko (1898), he was the ideological leader of the association. In contrast to the strong-willed
I. N. Archaeology and
N. Yaroshenko , Dubovskoy was a man of gentle and delicate, but very skillfully played the role of the eternal Mediator Wanderers older and younger generations.
Dubovskoy wrote nearly 400 paintings and more than 1,000 sketches. Known for his landscapes "Winter" (1884), "Early Spring" (1886), "On the Volga" (1892 and 1903), "hurricane" (1898), "Sunset" (1909), "Homeland" (1903 - 04), and others are easily recognizable themes and images peredvizhnicheskogo landscape.
Comrades appreciated the works Dubovskoy strong emotional feeling, but the artist often blamed by some careless execution. But one picture stands out in this series, and in the history of Russian art Dubovskoy came primarily as the author of the landscape "Silence Has Settled" (1890). The artist opened a new motive for the Wanderers, in his words - "silence before the storm", "when it is difficult to breathe when you feel his insignificance when approaching disaster." To realize this motive, he found an original solution. Suddenly flashed sunlight storm clouds are drawn heavy horizontal line, which occupies almost the entire upper half of the picture, above the blackened water, reflected in it. In the distance - a dark shoreline, as appressed to the top and bottom elements of sky and water. Earth loses its materiality, but also water - a mirror for the sky. The most tangible, palpable here "body" are storm clouds - bright and luminous. Landscape praised Isaac Levitan, who believed that Dubovsky managed to convey objective - "not the author, and the most damage."
