He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1854-61) in P. B. Basin . In 1863-71 he lived in Paris (in 1863-68 - retired AH). Academician (1868) and Professor (1870), the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. A member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (since 1873). Author scenes from the lives of the urban and rural poor of Normandy ("Sick Child", 1869, Tretyakov Gallery) and the nature of the historical genre paintings ("Scene of the massacre of St. Bartholomew", 1870, Tretyakov Gallery). Served as portraits. In his drawings and watercolors K.F.Gun the first professional artists turned to the proper Latvian topics.
