Tannauer Gonfrid Johann (1680-1737)

P After the manifesto of Peter I of Russia in attracting foreigners especially strong influx of German artists. In a small German working for them was not, so artists have been attracted to the work of unknown and distant Russia.
One of the most popular German artists Peter's time was Johann Gottfried Tannauer. He was one of the first masters, Peter accepted the invitation and signed a contract to enroll in Russian service in Vienna in October 1710.

In March 1711goda already arrived in Smolensk, accompanied Peter in the Prut campaign, after which he settled in St. Petersburg, where he lived until his death in 1737.
Among his students were Eropkin Usov and F.Cherkasov. Repeatedly, he painted portraits of Peter I and Catherine I. One of his most famous paintings is an equestrian portrait of Peter, "Peter I in the Battle of Poltava" 1710-ies.
